As an ISO-9001 certified supply chain management, warehousing services, and 3rd-Party logistics (3PL) provider, BR Williams of Oxford, Alabama, understands the importance of reducing its carbon footprint and maintaining a sustainable business.

Minimizing fuel usage and continually lowering emissions through several initiatives have earned BR Williams the coveted Smartway Eco Certification designation each year since 2005.

The SmartWay Program

Since the Great Recession, the freight industry in the United States has experienced significant growth, with over 51 million tons of goods transported daily. There has also been a 20-fold increase in E-commerce sales from 2000 to 2019.

However, this growth has also led to rising concerns about the environmental impact of global freight transport. Projections indicate that by 2050, emissions from freight transportation will surpass those from passenger vehicles.

  • Over 51 million tons of goods are transported daily in the United States.
  • E-commerce sales have increased 20-fold between 2000 and 2019.
  • Experts project that global freight transport emissions will exceed passenger vehicle emissions by 2050.

The SmartWay Program is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) program designed to encourage and assist logistics-related companies to reduce transportation-related emissions by promoting energy-reducing programs and equipment.

How BR Williams Became Smartway Eco Certified

The SmartWay program consists of a comprehensive system for tracking, documenting, and sharing data across all elements of the supply chain.

Beginning with a benchmark for comparison, BR Williams, as a company, reports miles-per-gallon data along with the types of equipment incorporated into their fleet to reduce emissions.

“BR Williams consistently invests in the latest technology to advance environmental sustainability, efficiency, and safety,” says Stephen Auvil, VP of Safety and Risk Management. “We are proud to be recognized by Smartway for our efforts to safeguard the future of our associates and the greater community.”
